Haro, Masi Launch 2011 Bikes July 21, 2010 12:00:19CARLSBAD, CA (BRAIN)Haro and Masi launched their 2011 bikes to the press yesterday at the Sheraton Carlsbad, as both brands had different points of emphasis to stress.
For Haro its back to the future, as the company looks to reintroduce its Dare to be Different slogan.
For some reason we kind of went away from that mentality, and we probably should have never done that, said Jill Hamilton (pictured), Haros MTB/Asphalt Bike brand manager. While the product was looking good, it was a little boringit was a little stale. The brand name on the downtube wasnt really jumping out. The branding on the bikes just kind of blended into the background. - [Read more] |

Tour tech: Fancy footwear at the Tour de France July 20, 2010 16:00:26Next to the bikes themselves, shoes are the next important piece of equipment to the riders: theyre the first point of contact with the most important part of the bike, theres often a fair bit of work put in to make them fit perfectly, and given the amount of time the riders spend strapped into them its no wonder that its the one piece of gear that they travel with 24/7. - [Read more] |

Itll be interesting to see what they do with it. With work starting now, hopefully well get a preview later this year

Brent Bookwalters Tour de France Diary: Life on Mr. Yellows team July 13, 2010 18:00:20Weve made it through the first nine days of this years Tour and I think everyone is breathing a sigh of relief. Its clear the notorious first week, as well as the first couple days in the mountains, have taken their toll on the riders. The peloton is littered with bandage-covered limbs, and the grupettos have been made up of more than a few champions of the sport. After the especially intense and dramatic nature of yesterdays stage, the rest day has arrived just in time. Our bodies are all tired and many of us are bruised, but its hard to dwell on that too long when you see your teammate pull on the yellow jersey. - [Read more] |
Fraunhofer developing bike helmets (and other products) that stink when damaged July 13, 2010 18:00:19Were glad youre using a bike helmet (and were glad youve opted for that really scary one we first saw in 2007). You do realize, however, that the more blows to the head you receive, the less effective the headgear is, right? Researchers at Germanys Fraunhofer Institute have developed a manufacturing process that injects microcapsules containing malodorous oils into the helmet itself, causing it to stink when damaged -- alerting you that its time to replace it (and making it difficult to try and make do with a less than safe one, at that). Indeed, the process, which a thick foil made of polypropylene to house the microcapsules, extends to other products as well, including: pressure hoses, water, and gas pipes (in which case the odor can be detected by automated "smell sensors"). As for the lids, theyre still trying to decide exactly which scent to use, but we have a suggestion -- smelling salts. Seems logical, right? - [Read more] |

Ouch! Dan Atherton out for the season
July 11, 2010 03:00:18This just in from Dan Brown, the Athertons team manager
Get well soon Dan!
Its with regret I have to contact you with some more injury news.
On Tuesday night of this week Dan was out riding dirt jumps at his local trails in Llanfyllin, when he crashed and landed awkwardly on his head. Dan was taken to Shrewsbury hospital in a ambulance where they X-rayed his upper spine. The results confirmed a fracture to his C2 vertebrae with a further CT scan confirming another fracture to his C1 vertebrae. On the positive side Dan has full movement in all his limbs and at present there is no damage to the nerves that pass through the central spinal column. Dan remains immobilised for precautionary measures while currently awaiting a transfer to the orthopaedic unit in Oswestry, a hospital the Athertons know well and one that is luckily renowned as the best unit in the country.
As long as everything goes to plan with his recovery we should hopefully see Dan on a bike by the end of the year. Our sympathies are with Dan and the rest of the Atherton family at this time and any well wishes to Dan can be made via the teams Facebook page. http://www.facebook.com/athertonracing - [Read more] |
Race tech: Reynolds debut deeper and faster RZR 92.2 wheels July 9, 2010 12:00:20Reynolds elite Composites Studio division officially unveiled a more aerodynamic version of their ultralight RZR 46 wheels under the Footon-Servetto riders in the opening prologue of this years Tour de France.
As the name suggests, the new RZR 92.2 uses a doubly deep 92.2mm rim but its not simply a scaled-up version of the original RZR 46. According to Reynolds director of technology and innovation Paul Lew, the 92.2 smoothes turbulent airflow over its rim surface by virtue of a precisely shaped rim that was designed largely through CFD (computational fluid dynamics) modelling. - [Read more] |
