Cycling should be a family sport, however it can be challenging to head out on the bike with your children. Remember, you will be traveling away from your home and sometimes be in a dangerous environment when you are out on the road. However, with a little knowledge and preparation your whole family can enjoy the many attributes of cycling. Always remember that as always safety is the first priority when it comes to your children so they must ALWAYS wear a helmet!
Whether you're using a childseat, a trailercycle or a trailer to take your kids along, you'll probably want to do so on a bicycle equipped with flat handlebars.

One of the great things about todays technologically advanced bikes is that they come with gears! That means that unlike those days when you were a kid and rode a single speed Stingray (complete with banana seat), modern bikes offer a wide range of gearing that make even climbing mountain passes in Colorado doable. However, along with that convenience comes the need to learn how to properly shift.

It may sound a little odd, but some new bike riders find it difficult to ride in straight line. This may not be the end of the world if all you do is ride your bike alone on wide open roads with no traffic, but that unfortunately is not the case for most of us. Typically, we find ourselves sharing park paths with joggers and other folks or riding with groups of other cyclists whilst sharing the road with motorists.

One of the best ways to tell how hard you are working during a bike ride or any other exercise is to monitor your heart-rate. Using a heart-rate monitor while you train is a little like using the tachometer in your car. Just like your vehicle is happiest when driven at certain rpms, exercising at an effective intensity level will help you make the most of your training time.

Now that you have forked over big bucks for that shiny new bike it is time to start thinking about how you can keep your ride looking great. A bicycle is a complex machine that is made up of many moving bike parts and all of those need regular maintenance. The hardest thing for most cyclists to keep clean is the chain. It gets gunked up over time and the black goo has a way of getting on your hands, bike clothes and elsewhere especially if you make the mistake of carrying the bike in your vehicle.

I don't know about you, but I get a little frustrated when I hear some of my road bike riding buddies complain about not getting respect from motorists and then 5 minutes later I see them running lights, disobeying traffic signs and generally ignoring the law. You have probably seen the bumper sticker "Same Roads, Same Rights". I could not agree more with the sentiment.
